Golf Courses

These areas are very high in pesticides, fertilizers, and herbicides to keep the lawns very green and weed free. Some of these chemicals go into the groundwater or are washed away by water runoff into streams and lakes.  Because golf courses tend to be built into nature, they are commonly near water sources.  They provide beauty and a challenge for golfers.  The fertilizers containing nitrogen and phosphorus cause anthropogenic eutrophication in the rivers. It causes algae blooms which use up all the oxygen in the rivers.  This ultimately deplete the dissolved oxygen needed for aquatic animals and is commonly called “choking out.”  http://www.health-choices-for-life.com/farm_runoff.html
